Update: 1.30.17 - - ratings
..5.21 million (they added both TNT and TBS showing to get that) watched the SAG Awards. That is brutal no matter how one slices and dices it. No spin can help it, either.
According to Deadline, The show was down 31 percent from 2015 and 16 percent from last year.
Winners will be updated with thoughts as the night progresses, as usual in my award season coverage for the main shows. This is one of them, as it often forecasts the Oscar winners, sans "La La Land" is top ensemble.
AWFUL RATINGS - - in the switch from Saturday night a couple years back to Sunday the last two times, SAG folk were looking for better ratings. NOPE. Worse. Now, please note, that the show aired on TNT and TBS - they added them up for the rating you will see.
... A show that awards TV shows and movies rates that low means something. Now, take a look at the Hollywood hate and politics and you may have your answer. Also, take into account that most shows have small audiences(niche) so why tune in and see people win for crap hardly anyone watches?
The Screen Actors Guild handed out a few curve balls on its way to Oscar. "Hidden Figures" took out favorites "Manchester By the Sea" and "Moonlight" and won top ensemble. Meanwhile, Denzel Washington beat out favorites Casey Affleck and/or Ryan Gosling for Male Lead Actor.
That sets up some drama when Oscar time comes Feb. 26. Wins that that can often be overshadowed by overzealous speeches of hate on Donald Trump, and it did.
Male Actor in a Lead Role:
Demzel Washington - "Fences"
Lead Actor in a Lead Role:
Casey Affleck - "Manchester By the Sea"
Female Actress in a Lead Role:
Emma Stone - "La La Land"
Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Mahershala Ali - "Moonlight"
Note: Sounds like they are trying to top other speeches...but his speech was humble and fitting, and well, darn good.
Female Actor in a Supporting Role:
Viola Davis - "Fences"
Note: Tough category and a deserving win. Denzel Washington is a producer of the film. He is good in everything he does. Solid win.
TV show Drama Ensemble:
"Stranger Things" - Netflix
Will make a mark for all the time I hear someone utter Trump hate in some fashion. And they will wonder why America is turning them off more and more..
The hmmm Tweet of the night...Sarah HylandVerified account @Sarah_Hyland Tonight's In Memoriam was really hard for me to get through. #sagawards
...Ashton Kutcher spouts off and gets applause and shows how silly his opinion was - - "now, it is time for the 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards..." Yes, they play other people and say other people's lines ..when they talk on their own, they often step all over themselves.
I pay little attention to the TV awards when the shows are mixed with movies, as they get in the way. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss wins and spouts off, too. Those who love "Seinfeld" and her may have just lost some fans...
“I am an actor” segment: starts out saying that it is OK to spout out your opinion, so says Kerry Washington. To have that said it means they are feeling the heat of said opinions.
The first award of the night goes to ....oh, most boring red carpet I've seen...that was this...
TV show stunt winner
#GameofThrones wins on #SAGAwards pre-show!
Movie stunt winner
#HacksawRidge wins Best Stunt Ensemble in a Film
Update 1.29.17 - One may go into tonight's show and think this should solidify "La La Land" as the front-runner for Oscars. However, look closer, as it is not in the top ensemble film. The SAGs honor ensmebles in film and that often can leave out a film with a lesser cast.
No problems here, as it seems as if certain powers to be are forcing "La La Land" down our throats for some reason. Of late, it hasn't focused of the best movies or films that people really like. It is more films they are telling you that we MUST like them, or we do not get it. Much like Hollywood and its politics - they force the issue and it scream of too much elitism, at time.
BEFORE: Will Hollywood calm down over Donald Trump or let loose? Sad times for them if that is the key to the show. They can and should simply just honor the movies of last year and enjoy themselves. They let us into their bubble for these shows and then, oftentimes, the show their true selves, and the public does not like what they see.
So, when I cover events of the business of show, I tend to ignore will comment on the tirades, but, hopefully, it is not the main story from them. It hurts others who won and are not showing their politics.
So, let's toast the award season and go with the flow.

The iconic Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall was the largest theater in the United States when it was built in 1926
The SAG Awards annually transforms the Shrine's Expo Hall into an intimate dinner showroom for the televised ceremony and the Auditorium stage into a unique setting for the Post-Awards Gala hosted by People and the Entertainment Industry Foundation.
At 194 feet (59 meters) wide and 69 feet (21 meters) deep, the Shrine’s is thought to be the largest proscenium arch stage in the country.
The Shrine was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1975
In 1933, David O. Selznick’s groundbreaking King Kong used the Shrine as the “New York” theater where the giant gorilla gets exhibited, helping to keep the film’s budget down to $672,000 (under $12 million in 2017 dollars)
It takes at least four days to transform the Showroom for the SAG Awards, a feat made possible by months of pre-planning
The Shrine Exposition Center’s 34,000 square foot wooden floor is cloaked in 11,800 square feet of black carpet
About 15,000 square feet of black drapery swathes the previously bare walls
Over 150,000 linear feet of chain (roughly 46,000 meters) – enough to stretch across the 30-Mile Studio Zone – are used to create the curtains and chandeliers
The stage floor is overlaid with 300 sheets, 4 foot by 4 foot each, of black glossy Formica
All SAG-AFTRA members in good standing are eligible to vote in all categories, which means 121,546 peers in the actors’ union choose the honorees this year
247 actors have been nominated for the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards
525 performers (350 for Film, 175 for Television) are nominated in Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble categories
It takes more than 700 staff and crew to make the SAG Awards a reality
